Powell, Michael

Powell, Michael
   b. 1905, Bekebourne, Kent; d. 1990
   Film-maker
Michael Powell is perhaps best known for his partnership with the Hungarian writer Emeric Pressburger. Their independent production company, The Archers, was responsible for the production of some of the finest films of the 1940s and 1950s, including The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, A Matter of Life and Death, The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus. Powell himself wrote, directed and produced along with Pressburger, and his work is held up by many contemporary directors as being amongst the finest ever made. Powell’s films have a rich, colourful feel, something uncommon in other British directors, and he used his medium to create work that blurred the divisions between fantasy and real life.
